چکیده

UNLABELLED To assess the importance of using conventional magnetic resonance imaging and T2 mapping to determine the pre-slip stage of the contralateral epiphysis in patients with a clinical and radiographic diagnosis of unilateral proximal femoral epiphysiolysis who were initially treated with in-situ fixation. METHODS This prospective clinical study on 11 patients with unilateral epiphysiolysis was conducted between February 2009 and August 2010, using magnetic resonance imaging on the contralateral hip. RESULTS We observed abnormalities in the proximal femoral capital physis of the contralateral unaffected hip, with edema under the growth plate in 27% of the patients assessed. CONCLUSION Magnetic resonance imaging is an early and sensitive method for detecting the pre-slip stage of the proximal femoral epiphysis.

Predicting a Contralateral Slip after Unilateral Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis: Is the Posterior Sloping Angle Useful?

1 Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA Prophylactic pinning of the uninvolved side after unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. The posterior sloping angle (PSA) has previously been proposed to predict contralateral slip. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the PSA can predict subsequent slip aft...

Radiographic evaluation in epiphysiolysis: possible predictors of bilaterality?

OBJECTIVE To identify anatomical changes and skeletal maturity through radiographic analysis, allowing more accuracy for indication of surgical management of non-slipped hips in patients with epiphysiolisys. METHOD A retrospective study of the radiographs of 61 patients followed until the end of skeletal growth, assigned to two groups: 37 patients with unilateral epiphysiolysis, and 24 patien...

Prediction of contralateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis using the modified Oxford bone age score.

BACKGROUND The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the modified Oxford bone score can be used as a predictor for the risk of developing contralateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) in children who present with a unilateral slip. METHODS We identified 260 patients treated for unilateral SCFE between 1980 and 2002 and followed them up to skeletal maturity or until de...

Ultrasonographic Diagnosis of Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

BACKGROUND Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), a fracture through the physis with resultant slip of the epiphysis, is the most common hip abnormality in adolescents and is a major cause of early osteoarthritis. Plain radiograph is the initial modality used to evaluate patients with painful hip joints. Ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which do not involve radiation exp...

Contralateral slip prediction in slipped capital femoral epiphysis: is bone age the answer?

Prophylactic pinning of an asymptomatic hip in Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis (SCFE) is controversial. Bone age has been used as a predictor of future contralateral slip risk and also in the decision making for prophylactic intervention. The efficacy of bone age at predicting a contralateral slip was tested in this study. Eighteen Caucasian children prospectively had bone age assessment usin...
